You Can't Get Theyah

A few weekends ago we visited Baxter State Park, up the road a bit.  Before we left we inquired as to directions, and surprisingly Google obeyed local customs and told us:
this reminded me of a certain set of Maine directions of yore, which I learned from Bert and I.  Essentially Google was telling me: "You can't get theyah from here."
I figure it was because the route from Orono to Baxter (which Google calls 64 Blasom Dr, Millinocket, ME, 04462-2190), takes you, well, through Millinocket, and along the same road to Millinocket that you would have to take if you were coming from East Vassalboro.

Mashed Little Fingers

On July 9th at 7:12 pm, Katie and I stood in a big cold room with powerful machines designed to emit radiation to pass through human bodies.  Together we pressed our and pressed our baby's hand onto a large, flat table with a clear paddle while the room size machine above looked down.

This is what it saw.

Can you see the a very small white spec beyond the final bone on the pointer?
That was it.

Reid had just had the tip of his left pointer finger smashed in an accident at home involving a water spigot.  The nail was almost off and the cut circled nearly 270 degrees of the tip of that finger.  You could have bent the tip of this finger back like a lid. These were the X-rays that culminated in a stitch up later that evening.  A stitch up which is now long since forgotten, the finger nail having grown back almost completely.

Here it is again, see it, on that little hand?

In these pictures you can see Katie's fingers and my fingers holding the little hand where it needs to stay.  They are very different sized fingers. Poor little fingers.

But here's the beauty of those little fingers.  They are so small.  Look at the lack of space between the bones on the adult fingers above.  Now look at the space between the bones in Reid's hand.

He's mostly flesh!
Thanks for being such a good sport about that, little friend.
It wasn't easy for the parents, but you did marvelously!

The Common Ground Fair

Two weekends ago, we took the kids to the Common Ground Fair in Unity Maine.  They use an old Belfast-Moosehead Lake (BML) line engine and coach to shuttle people from distant parking lots in the nearby towns of Unity and Thorndike.

Naturally, we HAD to ride.

It was beyond our wildest dreams.

Reid did some space-baby Pollacking.

We peered skeptically out on the overcast festival.

We posed for cuteness points.

We found a huge pile of sawdust, and Liam did some awesome jumps.

Oh, yeah and the servants were there too

Reid did some baby-planking.

Liam ran.

Reid grubbed.

We headed home.

Early Fall Hiking

The leaves are just beginning to hint some fall changes, as is the air.  Reid has been busy foraging for the last of the season's "beee-oos" (berries)--he's still finding them.

We went for a hike up Eagle's Bluff in the Clifton, ME area.  And spotted an airplane:

There was a lot of cool fungi.
Liam and Reid shared bites of an apple as they hiked.
At the top:
 Tim found a cicada:
It turned out to be very cooperative.

Dancing on the cliff edge:

Liam found a very trusty tool (which fortunately came equipped with soot) and got to work sawing with it.
Reid was fed nothing but grubs for dinner.
